DIY Countdown Calendar

I wanted to pop on and share with you the craft "recipe" to make your own countdown block calendar!

I loved doing this craft and it fits in perfectly on my living room shelf. The bottom block has a chalk board label on it so I can write on and erase the upcoming holiday or celebration we're waiting for with a chalk pen.

Supplies:
  1. Wooden blocks cut to size (all the cubes are 1.5" x 1.5" x 1.5". The two longer blocks are 6" x 1.5" x 1.5")
    1. Custom order blocks from Bayou Gifts and Upcycle.
  2. White and black paint (I used a basic acrylic craft paint from Michaels)
  3. Small can of wood stain in the color of your choice (I used Minwax in dark walnut from Home Depot)
  4. Chalk board labels (here, from Amazon) or chalk paint will work too
  5. Rubber gloves and newspaper for staining the blocks
  6. Small paint brushes for paint and stain
  7. A rag to wipe the stain
  8. 1 inch letter and number stencils (Mine came from Bella Art and Design)
  9. Pencil and tape to use with your stencils
  10. White and black Posca paint pens with a fine tip for the letters and numbers (here, from Amazon), or if you're great at doing freehand, a small paintbrush will do!
Steps:
  1. First, I contacted a seller on Etsy to make a custom order for me to have the wood pieces I needed cut to size. You can search for "custom wood cutting" over there or contact the shop I mentioned above and see if she's taking custom orders.
  2. Then I purchased a stencil sheet from Etsy as well. The letters and numbers are 1 inch high. The stencil material is thin and paint ran underneath easily, so I recommend using a pencil to trace the letters and numbers on first, then going over that with your paint pen or paintbrush.
  3. Once I received my wood I stained the top 4 square blocks and one of the long blocks with a few coats of stain trying to get each one to be similar in color. This is tricky (and messy because the pieces are small and will get on your hands) so I recommend doing one side at a time and wiping the stain off in equal lengths of time so the color stays consistent.
  4. I painted the other block all white.
  5. In order for the tracing to go easier, I cut all the numbers into individual separate pieces and used a piece of tape to hold each number in place while I traced onto my block.
  6. Once everything dried (I'd give it a good day or two because the acrylic may be tacky) I used my pencil to trace the words "Days until" on the white block and I traced all the numbers on the brown cubes. Then I went over the pencil marks with a fine tip Posca paint pen.
  7. Here are the numbers I put on each block:
    1. Block 1: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
    2. Block 2: 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, 1
    3. Block 3: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
    4. Block 4: 8, 9, 0, 1, 2, 3
  8. Finally, I carefully cut and applied my chalk board label to the bottom block. The labels I already had from Amazon weren't long enough to cover the entire length of the block, so I ended up cutting two of the labels to size and sticking them next to each other.
  9. Then write the holiday on with your chalk (I used a chalk pen that came with the labels).

That time I very nearly pulled the blogging plug

The last few months (heck, years even) I've been going back and forth, back and forth between wanting to keep my blog or simply let it go by not renewing when it came time to buy another yearly membership over at Wordpress. I find myself filling with dread at the thought of having to come up with a post, edit an image, carve out a chunk of time to clear my head enough to write something cohesive, and trying to keep what few readers I have left. It's true, I don't have the same amount of time to dedicate to blogging with the kids as I used to. And with having to pay to keep my account going, I was feeling discouraged because I hardly posted and felt like my money was wasted. And I very nearly called it quits last weekend until I remembered I set up an account over here on Blogger back in 2016.

I came over here back then because I had the same intentions, to slow my blogging down because of being consumed with mom life. But for some reason I went back to Wordpress anyway and kept going over there. I think I was just not ready to let it go yet. But I'm ready now. And I don't really have a choice now since I fucked something up big time when trying to redirect my URL and now my blog no longer works and I can't log in to fix it (nor can I post about where I moved to). But thankfully, I left myself a clean and easy layout over here and everything looked great, thank god, because I really don't remember anything about coding layouts anymore to tweak certain things. So the fact it was ready to go made the decision to move back to Blogger an easy one. And going through hundreds of posts one by one to update the image links gave me a small spark of desire to keep going.

Anyway, I'm glad I didn't quit. As I was going back and updating the image links, I realized how special a lot of those memories were and I would have been so sad to have lost them. I have a shit memory now a days, and I appreciate having these posts to look back on. That's the main reason I blog in the first place; for myself.

So here I am. Please update your feeds to my new URL: http://habitual-homebody.blogspot.com

Our Family Pics, 2018

After we were done buying and selling our houses with our realtor, she gifted us a gift certificate for a mini photo session with a professional photographer. It was such a nice gift! We scheduled a day at a nearby park and not to my surprise, both babies threw the biggest fits of their little lives. I'm not even joking. But the photographer was so good that you seriously couldn't even tell. Here's some of my favorites...
(I'm purposely not sharing the photo we're using on our Christmas cards so it can be a surprise for our family. I'll share it after they receive them).
All photos taken by Erin Jackimiak of Colorado.

The twins: Four months old and back to waking twice a night

Another late post! I'm playing catch up.

These guys are 4 months old tomorrow. They were slowly starting to get better at sleeping longer through the night, however the last few weeks have been pretty bad with Cormac waking twice, and by default Sadie does too because he won't go back to sleep. Four month sleep regression?

They also are starting to look at each other, but not really interacting yet. And then both are obsessed with their own hands always holding them and chewing on them. They also are great at napping through loud construction noises (we had work done in the house) and I think it's because they are used to one screaming in the other's ears and still sleeping through that. So practice made perfect. The costumes they are wearing are dinosaurs, which are their Halloween costumes!

Cormac, 4 months, 13 pounds. A big chunk. An easy smiler. A loud grump. A formula guzzler. A short napper. A huge drooler. A funny guy. An overdramatic prince. A green dinosaur.

Sadie, 4 months, 12 pounds. A petite lady. A sweet voice. Mommy's copy & paste. Hard to impress. A chill baby. Big brother's personality. A long napper. A big bottle drinker. A pink dinosaur.

Happy Halloween from my little dinosaurs to yours

Happy Halloween! Stay warm and safe!

Tonight we have plans to trick-or-treat around our new neighborhood with friends after eating our traditional english muffin pizzas. We might pull the babies in a wagon, but it's pretty cold out so we'll probably end up putting them in their stroller with blankets. At least their costumes are super warm. I'm hoping Lachlan will keep his dinosaur hood on!

The Twins: Three Months Old

Note: This is posting a whole month late!

The babies are 12 weeks old tomorrow. Both babies found their hands and are enjoying putting them in their mouths. They also smile more easily and look at big brother when he's nearby. They haven't noticed each other yet and they can still sleep through each other's crying and Lachlan's loud T-Rex impersonations throughout the day lol We moved them into their room at night but still keep them in their individual bassinets. I really missed having my own baby-free space. They are close to growing out of their bassinets very soon!

Cormac is turning into quite the chunk! I'm not certain, but I think he's about 12 pounds now. I can get him to laugh by tickling his neck. And he's not as fussy as he used to be, so he can be awake without crying now, but he still has his moments. He also has a pretty bad flat spot on his head that we had evaluated yesterday and he qualifies for physical therapy before going on to the whole helmet route. He prefers to always look left so I've been wedging him up to keep pressure off his head but he's so wiggly it doesn't last long.

Sadie is so calm and chill most days but then sometimes at night the witching hour hits us pretty bad where she is inconsolable and we're like, WHO ARE YOU?! It hasn't been so bad the last few days, it's totally random, but wow she can get so mad! Her hair looks more and more red to me, which is funny because there are no red heads in our family.

So you're having twins? First, take a deep breath. Then read this listfor all the gear and resources you'll need.

So first of all, if you find yourself here reading this list because you yourself are pregnant with twins, congratulations!

And second of all, don't freak out. Okay, maybe freak out a little bit because twins are like, seriously crazy and cool and surprising and overwhelming and double the cute. You are going to be ok, I promise.

There's things out there in this new "twin mom" world of yours that will make your life easier and were most likely invented by a twin mom because she recognized the need for such things. So know that if there's something you think you'll need specific to twins, it probably already exists and you just need to give it a good Google or ask another twin mom about it. And if it doesn't exist, you should jump on that patent like, yesterday and become rich.

Anyway...

Finding out I was pregnant with twins was quite a shock to put it mildly! I was in denial for a good 4 months and couldn't sleep because my brain wouldn't shut off about ALL the what-ifs. After the initial shock started to wear off (which I still don't think it ever really did, I just became used to it), I started getting down to business and researching nearly everything I needed to know about twins, from sleeping arrangements, double strollers, twin specific gear, and breast pumps. Here I have compiled a list of resources I found helpful and all the gear that made my own life with twins easier after much research.

And you don't necessarily need two of everything. I had one of most everything below except for cribs, bassinettes, and car seats (obviously you need two car seats, duh). Everything else I rotated between each baby otherwise my house would be drowning in gear.

As I write this, we are almost 4 months into twin life, and are still alive!

Gear:

Stroller

Contours Options Elite Tandem Double Stroller (Comes with two toddler seats like in the photo above)
Graco Snugride Car Seats (Cheaper than the Contours car seats)
Contours Tandem click connect adapters (so the Graco car seats will work with the Contours stroller)
If you have an older kiddo too, you might consider getting a Tag-A-Long. (Note: Triple strollers are insanely huge, heavy, and hard to steer. If your older kid is still too little or fast/slow to walk along side you, consider putting them in the front of a double stroller in the toddler seat, put a twin in the back of the stroller closest to you in their car seat, and wear the other twin).

Carriers

Weego carrier (soft carrier)
Twingo carrier (more supportive carrier)

Money saving tip

To save money, try to buy used! I bought the Twin Z pillow for half price from Letgo, the snugapuppy swing and lots of clothes from our local kid's consignment store Once Upon A Child for half retail price, and I was searching for a used Weego carrier but was unsuccessful in finding one so I bought it new, boo.

Try looking on:

Facebook marketplace
Craigslist
Local kids consignment stores (Once Upon a Child, Kid to Kid)
Just Between Friends consignment sale (MY FAVORITE way to buy and sell!)
Letgo App
Ask friends for hand-me-downs
My moms group had a clothes swap

Then, when you're done with your kid's gear (and you're done with having children because you are, right? Otherwise you'd be crazy. Just kidding! Sort of.) you can sell all this stuff back to your local kids consignment store or at Just Between Friends when they have their next event near you and make some money back to buy new gear and clothes for when your twins get bigger.
Please list your favorite twin gear in the comments below!
