Attention: Yarn lovers, you will want to read this. This is not a sponsored post.
I finally bit the bullet and signed up for a 3 month classic YarnBox! I've had my eye on this service for so long, and I've been making a little bit of money from my blog so I thought why the heck not?
Yarnbox is a yarn-y subscription service for crocheters and knitters. Each box is curated based on your tastes. So if you like to work with chunky yarns vs worsted yarns, bright colors vs neutral colors, knit vs crochet, you can customize your box to your liking. Then you choose your service plan, 1 month, 3 month, 6 month or bi-monthly (every other month). Of course, the longer you sign up for, the more money you'll save. And finally, you choose classic, luxe (which includes a bit fancier and more expensive yarns) or sock yarns. I signed up for the 3 month classic subscription.
Each box contains enough yarn to offer you a substantial savings than if you were to purchase the yarn individually from the manufacturer. And you'll also receive both a crochet and knitting pattern to go with the yarn in your box. Your patterns will be saved in your digital library on Yarnbox.com.
What was so much fun about February's box was that both the yarn companies whose yarn I received, collaborated together to come up with complimentary colors for this month's project! I received a gorgeous light blue yarn from Sincere Sheep and a multi-colored green colorway from Knitted Wit. I'm really happy with the colors I received. But on Yarnbox's Ravelry discussion board, you can see all the other color options that people got. Off the top of my head, I saw some people with purple and pink and green and cream.
So I received 2 hanks of yarn (each hank was 330 yards) and two patterns for $37.95. And I worked it out that everything in my box, including the patterns, was valued at somewhere near $63. That's a pretty good deal! These yarns are both a squishy DK weight blend of Polworth wool and Tussal silk and colored with natural dyes. These photos don't really do justice for the beautiful colors mixed into the green yarn.
And I made the crochet color-blocked cowl. Here's some pics of blocking and the end result:
YarnBox is seriously so much fun. I loved the yarns, the patterns, and the Ravelry community. I am already so excited for March's box!

I have wanted to sign up for yarn box forever, right now I do a little $10 month sample yarn, which sends you enough for 2 12x12 blocks and patterns to go with the new yarn. Its not full balls but its a little special something for the yarny me in the mailbox. I would love to sign up for the luxe yarn box (because there are NO yarn shops or stores near me, over 100 miles) but I just cant justify the cost right now. So I am content to look and drool at your box. Your infinity looks great, and you got my fave colors. Good luck, I follow on Bloglovin, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Crystal! What's the name of the $10 box you're getting? I'd love to check it out too :)

ReplyDeleteI had the opposite experience with yarn box. It didn't seem to matter what colours you chose to love or dislike .. hues or experience and as you mentioned size of yarn. I received twice very bright purple when there was more blue or brown or less intense colours. I said no red, brown favorite and nothing bright. The yarn size was the same for everyone in the classic box as was the size for the artyarns. The pattern was for all levels of knitters and looking on ravelry group I seen no difference. When I questioned the sending of bright colours they replied they only try to fulfill your wishes and can not guarantee colour preferred. To me that makes no sense in the questions in what you prefer. I did not see a huge savings in yarn prices except maybe the artyarns? I barely had enough yarn to finish the pattern they sent (the pattern tells you you may run out) and my last problem was it says free shipping but they charge you for standard and want you to pay more for expedited shipping . I quit after 3 shipments and would not recommend to anyone. Money better spent is to find a pattern and shop either LYS or online and use something you have never tried :)
ReplyDeleteI know this post is a year old, but I just want to say that I signed up for Yarnbox partially based on this post and I just got my first shipment. I love it! Definitely a huge savings on the cost of buying the yarn and the yarn was in a color and weight that I had put as my favorites. I wasn't a huge fan of the knit pattern, though I loved the crochet one. Too bad I don't crochet -- guess I need to learn! Only my first month, but so far, I'm thrilled. It's fun getting yarn that I might not try otherwise. And if I get something I don't like, there's a great destash/trade group on their Ravelry board.
ReplyDeletei'm glad you like it! i love stalking the ravelry board to see what everyone got!
ReplyDeleteHello fellow yarn crafter. I too have wanted to try Yarn Box but wasn't sure regarding the costs. Yours is one of many reviews I've checked out (2 were YouTube videos) and all have had good experiences with this company. I love pretty yarns and pretty fabric (I'm a quilter too) and find it REALLY hard to pass either when I'm out shopping. I think I've just talked myself into signing up for Yarn Box, heck I was getting quilt fabric monthly why not yarn? And by the way your scarf is just lovely, color of yarn and your pattern.
