Let me start off by saying that I love Monica's pattern for this pillow. It was really easy and she had great photo tutorials throughout. And her pillow looks ADORABLE. My beef is with this god awful yarn, Jersey be Good from Wool and the Gang. Let me
It all started when I stumbled upon their website through Pinterest. I have been searching for SO long to find tshirt yarn to make a rug with but there is hardly any in stock in the US. So when I found Wool and the Gang, they had a 35% off coupon code which was basically free shipping (they are in the UK) so I jumped and ordered 3 skeins of their yarn. But I was totally bummed because they had hardly any colors in stock to choose from. And go figure, not even a week after I placed my order, I get an email saying more colors are back in stock so I was kicking myself. You know the feeling.
Anyway, I have never been as disappointed with a yarn before than when working with this yarn. The thicknesses of each color were completely different so there was no chance in hell that I'd be able to make anything with more than one color. I GET that the yarn is made from recycled fabric and it's saving the Earth and blah blah, and with that comes the risk of inconsistency with the thickness. But that makes it really hard to work with because my projects would come out warped and misshapen. So the rug idea was tossed out the window.
So hmm, I have this god awful yellow color to play with so I send out an instragram pic of it asking for suggestions and someone said a pillow so I went to Ravelry and found Monica's pattern there and was excited to give it a try.
I get halfway through the pillow and I'm already nearly out of yarn! What the hell is with the small skeins of yarn costing so much money? Knit picks has small balls too. So I decided to add in three rows using the other colors I have to save on the yellow so I wouldn't run out. But the grey yarn was nearly twice as thick and the blue was twice as thin. It's so ugly!! The yellow had the perfect thickness and stretchiness but I just didn't have enough to finish the pillow.
So that is why my pillow has an ugly ass ring of grey and blue. I will have to try this pattern again but with a much better yarn. There's no way I'm going to put this pillow anywhere except the closet. And I don't even want to look at the yellow anymore to reuse the yarn for something else because it makes my eyes hurt. Plus, it weights about 7 pounds since the yarn is heavy and I stuffed it with old pillow cases. I could probably knock somebody out having a pillow fight.
So there you have it...a pissed off crocheter bitching about yarn. Watch out! ;)
Yarn used: Jersey be Good By Wool and the Gang
Hook: 10mm (but could have used anything from a 5mm to 20mm, stupid yarn)
Pattern: Crochet heart pillow 2.0
As I was reading this your instagram photos were cycling on the side and BALLS came up. So, you know, take that as you will. :)
